Common Urinary Problems in Cats & How to Treat Them

Blog Home Dec 8, 2021

From the ends of their magnificent whiskers to the tip of their tail, naturally, you want to do whatever you can to keep your favourite floof feline fine! Some troublesome symptoms are easier to spot than others (who can ignore them hacking up a huge hairball?), so it’s important to know what to look out for when it comes to your kitty’s health.

If your puss is pee-ved by urinary problems, there are some tell-tail signs to be aware of.

Symptoms of urinary problems in cats include…

  • Frequently going to the toilet but only passing a small amount of urine each time
  • Blood in your kitty’s urine
  • Straining to urinate
  • Weeing outside of their litterbox – particularly if they’re toilet trained
  • Appearing as though they’re in pain – there may be crying or moaning as they try to pass urine
  • Paying extra attention to and licking their urethral opening (where urine leaves their body)

How to treat urinary problems in cats

Getting the right treatment for your puss as soon as possible will help them get back to their usual sassy selves.

If your vet identifies that the cause of your cat’s urinary issues are due to an infection, they’ll be able to prescribe antibiotics.

If there’s an obstruction in the urethra, your vet may insert a catheter and flush the urethra with sterile water to clear the obstruction.

For cats that are prone to developing bladder stones, your vet might recommend a special diet to reduce the risk of these forming in the future.

Of course, there are many other causes of urinary problems in cats which can require a whole host of other treatments. The best thing you can do for your furry friend is to take them on a trip to ‘you know where’ (aka the vets) asap. Don’t expect any thanks from your cat though…
